Abstract:
We know Bartók as one of the most important composers of the twentieth century. But he wasn’t only a composer. He was also a pianist of the highest caliber who had an accomplished and respected performing career, with direct lineage through his teacher to Franz Liszt. He was a piano teacher his entire adult life. He was a scholar--an ethnomusicologist, deeply and scientifically engaged in the collection, study and analysis of folk music. He was also a musical editor of masterwork classics by composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. His works for piano represent the synthesis of all these aspects of Bartók--- the composer, folklorist, pedagogue and scholar. His remarkable musical journey took him from his native Hungary to the United States (with periods of residence in the Asheville area!). Victoria Fischer Faw will lead us on a tour through the life and music of this versatile musical pioneer, featuring performances of some of her favorite Bartók piano works.
